Four Easy Ways to Work With Percentages

Percentages can describe a portion, compare two numbers, or show how much a value has changed. These common calculation methods cover the percentage problems people encounter most often.

01

Find a Percentage of a Number

To find a percentage of a number, convert the percentage into a decimal and multiply it by the number. For example, 20% of 150 is 30.

Percentage × Number = Result
02

Find What Percentage One Number Is of Another

Divide the first value by the second value and multiply the result by 100. This tells you what percentage one number represents of another.

(Part ÷ Whole) × 100
03

Calculate Percentage Difference

Percentage difference compares two values without treating either one as the starting value.

|A − B| ÷ ((A + B) ÷ 2) × 100
04

Calculate Percentage Change

Percentage change shows how much a value has increased or decreased compared with its original value.

((New − Original) ÷ Original) × 100
PERCENTAGE GUIDE

How to Calculate a Percentage

Percentage Calculator tools make it easier to solve everyday percentage problems without working through the arithmetic manually. A percentage expresses a relationship as parts per hundred, which makes it useful for comparing quantities, measuring changes, understanding discounts, reviewing scores, and many other everyday calculations.

The basic idea is simple: a percentage can be converted to a decimal by dividing it by 100. You can then multiply that decimal by the number you want to evaluate. For example, to find 15% of 240, convert 15% to 0.15 and multiply 0.15 by 240. The result is 36.

Percentage Formula

One of the most useful percentage formulas is:

Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

If a class has 40 students and 28 of them completed an assignment, the percentage who completed it is calculated by dividing 28 by 40 and multiplying the result by 100. That gives 70%.

Percentage Increase and Decrease

Percentage change is useful when you want to understand how a value moved from an original amount to a new amount. A positive result represents an increase, while a negative result represents a decrease.

Percentage Change = ((New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100

For example, if a value rises from 80 to 100, the change is 20. Dividing 20 by the original value of 80 and multiplying by 100 gives a 25% increase.

Percentage Difference vs. Percentage Change

These two calculations are related but they answer different questions. Percentage change uses an original value as its reference point. Percentage difference compares two values using their average as the reference point. When neither value is considered the starting value, percentage difference is usually the more appropriate comparison.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLES

Percentage Calculations in Everyday Life

Percentages appear in many situations. Here are a few simple examples showing how the calculations work.

Example 01

Shopping Discount

A product costs $80 and has a 25% discount. The discount is $20, leaving a final price of $60.

Example 02

Test Score

If you answer 45 questions correctly out of 50, your score is 90%.

Example 03

Price Increase

If a price moves from $100 to $120, the increase is $20, which represents a 20% increase from the original price.
